Everyone loves Google Maps, right? It’s the most used maps service on Windows PCs and, obviously, Android devices. What about Macs? What about iPhone? Uh, not so much. Apple’s own Maps app dominates on Apple’s devices.
If you are a Mac user, then you are pretty lucky to get Google Map service on the desktop. Unlike Google Earth, Google Maps is another separate service from Google that is allows users to quickly view any location. In other words, Google Maps is a stripped down version of Google Earth and takes far less bandwidth.
So, what if you want to use Google Maps on your Mac? Either use Maps in a browser tab, or use QuickMap, which is Google Maps within a simple Mac app. Personally, I’m no longer into using anything by Google but I recognize many Mac users haven’t seen the light and don’t mind being stalked online, so an app that does Google’s Maps might be acceptable.
![]() The. Pretty. Face.
QuickMap is a pretty face for Google Maps and a wannabe substitute for Google Maps in a browser window. A few bucks gets you exactly what looks and feels like Google Maps in a Safari or Chrome browser tab, but it’s inside a Mac app instead. It’s even available on the Mac App Store, so Apple is sanctioning a competing product. Go figure.
The app itself resides in the Mac’s Menubar so it’s easily accessible from within other Mac apps with a click. QuickMap remembers state so it will open up again to where you left off after the last usage. Open up multiple map windows with ease, though I found the fullscreen option to be somewhat problematic.
What you see is Google Maps, so you get mostly the same Maps features for search, zoom in and zoom out, and pretty much whatever Maps does QuickMap does, but also app screen opacity. Mostly? Not everything works all the time.
Unfortunately, QuickMap doesn’t get many favorable reviews from the Mac App Store and rightly so as the whole experience is a bit buggy. The app developer’s website is a Facebook page which should act as a warning sign.

What if you must have Google Maps on your Mac and still want to avoid using Apple Maps and don’t want to use a browser?

Google Maps App For Mac Os
The MenuTab for Google Maps looked promising but is no longer in the U.S. Mac App Store. If you’re lacking in intelligence but have money to burn there’s always the Map app, which is priced at nearly $10, has a couple of dozen one star reviews, and hasn’t been updated since 2012. In fact, nearly every maps app on the Mac App Store has far more one star and negative reviews than even three star reviews.
What does that say?
Google Maps App For Macbook Pro
Since I prefer not to use anything Google anymore (anyone who tracks you online presence as much as Google should be a registered stalker) Apple’s Maps on the Mac works well and gets highly recommended by those of us who use it more than Google Maps.
